Reality: While these theories have undeniable appeal, no credible scientific evidence existsthat diet or
nutritional supplements can cure autism. Children with autism certainly canhave allergies and nutritional
deficiencies, and correcting these problems can help such achild to be healthier. This, in turn, may improve
the child’s behavior and general outlook,but special diets or vitamins are very unlikely to cure the autism
itself, no matter whattestimonials say.
- Autistic are a danger to society.
Reality: Violent behavior has led to fears about violence and autism. While there are manyautistic individuals
who exhibit violent behavior, their behavior is almost always caused byfrustration, physical and/or sensory
overload, and similar issues. It is very rare for anautistic person to act violently out of malice.
- Autistic people can’t do much of anything.
Reality: Autistic individuals can achieve great things – but only if they’re supported bypeople who believe in
their potential. Autistic people are often the creative innovators inour midst. They see the world through a
different lens – and when their perspective isrespected, they can change the world.
- Children with autism are unable to learn in a normal school environment and should be educated in a
separate program.
Reality: Because one of the symptoms of ASDs is abnormal social interaction and the goalof any educational
program is to develop a contributing member of society, isolating children with autism from children without
the disorder may inhibit their ability to learn appropriate social behaviors. When individualized services are
provided early, children with autism are able to benefit greatly from a normal school setting.
- ASDs are never present with other types of disorders.
Reality: ASDs can occur alongside any other disorder, such as Down syndrome, deafness,blindness, etc.
